Morning: Boat ride at the Camp followed by guided tour of the Akharas* Afternoon at leisure

Wake up at dawn and immerse yourself in a session of yoga and breathing exercises to the melodious chimes of the temple bells, resonating from the “Kumbh City” in the distance. Enjoy tea and cookies as you feel the energy to encapsulate your senses.

Post breakfast; prepare yourself for a mesmerizing experience with an exclusive boat ride to the holy the Camp (confluence) to observe the Kumbh Mela from a unique vantage point. View the banks flanked by devotees performing different rites and rituals, or taking the holy dip unaffected by the freezing cold waters of the river.

Note: The boat ride is subject to availability and will not be available on bathing dates & a day prior to the bathing date.

Later, set course on a gentle paced walk through the world’s largest temporary, tented city where the Akharas have their presence. An Akhara is a place of practice with facilities for boarding, lodging and training on the path of spiritual enlightenment. The Juna Akhara, with over 400,000 sanyasis is perhaps one of the largest sects present at the Kumbh Mela. They are also considered to be the most fascinating.

The sadhus are divided into four major categories – Nagas (Sanyasis), Vairagi (Mundies), Udasi and Nirmala (Nanak Sahi). These four categories are then further organized into different Akharas. There exists a predetermined order which the various Akharas follow during the Shahi procession on the specific bathing days.

A vast majority of the members of this Akhara are Naga Babas (naked ascetics). Considered to be the defenders of the Santan Dharma, these sanyasis march naked, covered in holy ash during the bathing rituals at the Kumbh. This elite brotherhood of naga sadhus and sanyasis are regarded as the “holiest of holy men” by the Hindu believers and much of the attention of those arriving at the Kumbh revolves around them.

Enjoy lunch and some time at leisure, or if you feel up to it, set off to explore the renowned sites such as Mankameshwar Temple - dedicated to Lord Shiva and the belief goes that what’s wished for does come true. Take a stroll to Saraswati Ghat – a very famous bathing ghat followed by a visit to the Alopi Temple which is unique as there is no statue of a deity in the temple however, a wooden carriage is worshiped.

Note: The optional excursion to Allahabad City will not be available on bathing dates and a day prior to the bathing date.
Return to the comfort of the camp and enjoy an interactive discourse of religion and mythology by experts in the evening, followed by a sumptuous vegetarian dinner.

Who are Naga Sadhus?

+   Know more

Who are Naga Sadhus?

Naga Sadhus are a particular group of Shaivite saints who reside in the Himalayan Caves and come to visit the civilization only during the Kumbh Mela. This is the only event when these ascetic saints can be seen amongst the general Indian population. The Naga Sadhus have unique characteristic features drawing inspiration from the famous Hindu god Shiva. They hold tridents crowned with human skulls. Their bodies are smeared in thick ash and they wear heavy coils of matted hair on the head. These saints remain completely naked even during biting cold. They smoke Marijuana through a pipe called a Chillum or Shiv Muli.

Akharas of Kumbh Mela

+   Know more

Akharas of Kumbh Mela

Akhara is the place of meeting for the religious groups, it is here that the sadhus carry out the religious practices. These saints are said to be followers of Lord Shiva and Vishnu, hence there are Shaivite Akharas (dedicated to Shiva) and there are Vaishnavite Akharas (dedicated to Vishnu). The holy men that are part of these groups are often seen with matted hair, some even bare body, and some donned in saffron clothes. Ardh Kumbh will be the perfect opportunity to learn about these religious groups and capturing them in lense as some of them make for unique pictures.
